My website is climbing the search engines, and I expect to be on the first page for 3-5 of my top keywords within the next few months if all goes well. My biggest fear is that my first page rankings won’t equal heavy traffic (and ultimately conversions). Does anyone have any real-life experience on whether first page rankings guarantee heavy traffic?

There is no "guarantee" with the search engines and traffic these days, however we can be sure that you will receive more traffic depending on how many people search per month for those targeted keywords. You could come up #1 in Google for a keyword but if it is searched 20 times per month, it may be useless. Perhaps do some keyword research to see before getting your hopes up?
